The Scent of Herbs
on My Wrist

My childhood was wrapped in the scent of herbs my grandmother carried home from the deep mountains. In the misty mornings, she would take my hand and lead me into the dew-covered woods.

"The best mugwort grows by the stream—  it keeps the mosquitoes away," she'd say, crushing mint leaves between her fingers to awaken my senses. "You must choose atractylodes from between the rocks, and always leave some behind—offer your thanks to the mountain."

By noon, our bamboo basket would be filled with fresh herbs. Back home, she would sit in the courtyard, grinding the herbs into a fragrant paste with a stone mortar. She shaped the paste into smooth, round beads and strung them into a bracelet, tying it gently around my wrist. It wasn’t just an ornament—it felt like protection.

Whenever I felt unsettled or lost, the gentle scent at my wrist would calm my spirit, as if nature itself was guiding me home.

Healing from Nature,
Not Chemicals

When I caught a chill, she warmed my acupuncture points with moxa. When I was tired, she used a curved horn tool to scrape the tension from my back, leaving my skin flushed like a sunset. In the kitchen, ceramic pots simmered with tangerine peel and codonopsis root. Scented pouches hung by the bed, releasing a faintly bitter herbal aroma—on summer nights, with crickets singing outside, that scent would lull me into deep sleep.

That herbal fragrance—grounding, steady, serene—never left me. Even after I grew up and left home, just brushing my fingers against the herbal beads could bring back her gentle gaze. And my heart would quiet, little by little.

A Scent That Awakens the Way Home

The pace of city life gradually eroded my forest memories—until one day, walking in the woods, an old artisan gifted me a handmade incense-bead bracelet. The sharp, earthy scent of aged mugwort filled my nose. Suddenly, the thump of the stone mortar, my grandmother’s soft humming, the flicker of firelight in her eyes—all came rushing back.

This scent didn't just stir memories. It brought clarity. Amid the city’s noise and confusion, it became a beacon—helping me find my way back to my true self.
